Slotting pipe in oil drilling

Date:2025-05-08

In oil drilling operations, sand production from the reservoir can significantly reduce well output. To mitigate this issue, slotted pipes are commonly used as an effective sand control tool, particularly during early well completion or production stages.

A slotted pipe is a high-strength alloy steel casing featuring precision-cut openings arranged in specific patterns. These slots typically have rectangular or trapezoidal cross-sections, designed to efficiently filter out sand while allowing oil to flow through.

Compared with conventional mechanical machining, advanced techniques now allow for the precise formation of trapezoidal and curved slots. Slot widths can be as narrow as 0.1 mm with uniform spacing, free of slag, and requiring no secondary processing. This results in several key advantages, including high dimensional accuracy, excellent processing efficiency, and a broad range of design adaptability.
