ASTM A53 carbon steel seamless pipe specifications

Date:2025-02-07

ASTM A53 is a carbon steel alloy commonly used for structural applications and low-pressure pipelines. It is specified for seamless and welded black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipes ranging from NPS 1/8″ to NPS 26. ASTM A53 is suitable for pressure and mechanical applications and is also acceptable for use in steam, water, gas, and air lines.

Types and Grades of ASTM A53 Pipe

ASTM A53 pipe is available in three types and two grades:

Type F: Manufactured with a furnace butt weld or a continuous weld (Grade A only).

Type E: Produced with an electric resistance weld (Grades A and B).

Type S: A seamless pipe, available in Grades A and B.

Grades of ASTM A53 Pipe

Grade A: Suitable for general applications.

Grade B: More commonly used and provides higher strength and pressure ratings compared to Grade A.

ASTM A53 Grade B Seamless pipe is the most popular product under this specification. It is frequently dual-certified to ASTM A106 Grade B Seamless pipe, meaning it meets the requirements of both standards.

Comparison with Other Standards

ASTM A53 Grade B: This material is widely used in various applications requiring medium to low-pressure ratings.

API 5L Grade B: A similar standard under the American steel pipe classification. API 5L Gr.B includes welded pipes, while A53 Grade B can refer to both seamless and welded pipes.

A53 Grade B ERW (Electric Resistance Welded): Refers specifically to the electric resistance welded version of ASTM A53 Grade B steel pipe.

API 5L Gr.B Welded: Refers to welded steel pipes under the API 5L standard, commonly used in the oil and gas industry.
