Pup joints are short tubular components used in oil and gas drilling and production. They serve as spacers to adjust the overall length of drill strings, casing strings, or tubing, ensuring precise assembly. Typically, they range from 2 feet to 10 feet in length, significantly shorter than standard 30-40 foot drill pipes or casings. Their name originates from their smaller size—similar to how a puppy is smaller than a fully grown dog.
Common Pup Joint Lengths
While there is no strict standard, pup joints are manufactured in various sizes to meet specific operational needs. The most frequently used lengths include:
2 feet (24 inches)
3 feet (36 inches)
5 feet (60 inches)
10 feet (120 inches)
The required length depends on the total assembly length of the drill or casing string and the standard joint sizes used. Pup joints help drillers fine-tune the overall string length when standard joints alone would fall slightly short.
Weight Considerations
The weight of a pup joint varies based on its outer diameter (OD), wall thickness, and length. Smaller diameter joints may weigh under 100 pounds, while larger joints used for deep wells can exceed 2,000 pounds. These components are typically made from API-grade steel, identical to standard drill pipes and casings, ensuring the same strength and durability.
Below is an estimated weight per foot for common oilfield pipe sizes:
2 3/8”OD drill pipe–~9 lbs/ft
4 1/2”OD drill pipe–~19 lbs/ft
5 1/2”OD casing–~29 lbs/ft
7”OD casing–~49 lbs/ft
For example, a 5-foot pup joint of 5 1/2”casing would weigh around 145 lbs (5×29 lbs/ft), while a 10-foot pup joint of the same size would weigh approximately 290 lbs. Proper weight calculations are crucial to prevent overloading cranes and to maintain structural integrity in drilling operations.
