Key Characteristics of 316H Seamless Stainless Steel Pipe
316H belongs to the austenitic stainless steel family and carries the UNS designation S31609. Compared with standard 316 stainless steel, it contains a higher carbon content (0.04%–0.10%), which improves high-temperature strength and creep resistance. This makes it especially suitable for continuous service in the 550°C–750°C range.
Superior Corrosion Resistance
The 2%–3% molybdenum content enhances resistance to reducing media and provides excellent protection against chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion.
High-Temperature Strength
The elevated carbon content allows 316H stainless steel to maintain high yield and tensile strength at elevated temperatures, ensuring safety in critical high-pressure systems.
Good Fabrication Properties
Despite higher hardness, 316H offers excellent ductility, weldability, and machinability, enabling production of seamless pipes in diverse sizes and configurations.
Manufacturing Process of 316H Seamless Stainless Steel Pipe
Raw Material Selection
High-quality billets or plates ensure compliance with chemical and mechanical standards.
Hot Piercing
Heated billets are pierced to form the initial hollow shell.
Rolling & Stretching
The hollow billet is reduced and dimensionally adjusted through rolling or stretching equipment.
Heat Treatment
Solution or stabilization treatments relieve stress and optimize the microstructure.
Testing & Inspection
Nondestructive and destructive tests verify compliance with international quality standards.
Application Fields of 316H Seamless Stainless Steel Pipe
Oil & Gas
Transporting corrosive fluids in offshore platforms and deep-sea fields.
Chemical & Pharmaceutical
Equipment such as reactors, heat exchangers, and distillation towers operating under high pressure and temperature.
Nuclear & Power Generation
Steam generators, reactor cooling systems, and other components requiring radiation and heat resistance.
Food & Beverage
Hygienic pipelines and storage tanks that are safe, easy to clean, and non-toxic.
Comparison with Other Stainless Steels
Versus 304 Stainless Steel
316H offers superior resistance to chloride-induced corrosion and greater high-temperature strength.
Versus 316L Stainless Steel
316L has lower carbon (≤0.03%) to prevent intergranular corrosion but sacrifices high-temperature strength. By contrast, 316H’s higher carbon enhances performance in elevated temperature and pressure conditions.
In short, 316H seamless stainless steel pipe is the material of choice where strength, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature reliability must come together—making it indispensable in energy, petrochemical, and high-tech industries.
