ASTM A312-21 standard covers seamless, straight-seam welded, and heavily cold worked austenitic stainless steel pipes intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service. Straight seam stainless steel pipes under this specification are widely used in chemical processing, oil and gas transportation, food-grade piping systems, and power generation industries due to their excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and versatility in size and material selection.
Among the many aspects to understand about these pipes, one critical factor is the range of materials used in their production. The choice of stainless steel grade significantly affects the pipe's corrosion resistance, strength, weldability, and service life.

Material Classification of ASTM A312 Straight Seam Stainless Steel Pipes
The materials used for manufacturing ASTM A312 straight seam stainless steel pipes are diverse and can be classified based on national and international standards. Below is a summarized breakdown:
1. Chinese National Standard Grades
Traditional and revised Chinese GB/T standard designations include:
Classic grades: 1Cr17Mn6Ni5N, 0Cr18Ni9, 00Cr19Ni10, 0Cr17Ni12Mo2, etc.
New naming system: 06Cr19Ni10 (equivalent to 304), 022Cr17Ni12Mo2 (equivalent to 316L), 10Cr17, 12Cr13, etc.
These materials are commonly used in domestic applications for pressure vessels, industrial pipelines, and corrosion-resistant structures.
2. Japanese Standard Grades (JIS)
Common types: SUS304, SUS316L, SUS321, SUS310S, SUS430, SUS410, etc.
These grades are widely recognized for their reliability in food processing, marine applications, and architectural uses.
3. American Standard Grades (ASTM/SAE)
Austenitic stainless steels: 201, 202, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 317L, 321, 347
Ferritic and martensitic grades: 410, 420, 430, 439, 440A, etc.
These are the core materials specified in ASTM A312 and form the basis for most global stainless pipe exports.
4. High Performance & Special Alloys
For highly corrosive or extreme environments:
Super austenitic alloys: NAS 185N (254SMO), AL6XN, NAS 255NM
Duplex and super duplex: NAS 329J3L (S32205)
Nickel-based & heat-resistant alloys: INCONEL 625/690, HASTELLOY C-276, MONEL 400/K500
Precipitation hardening steels: 17-4PH, 17-7PH (NAS 630/631)
These are chosen for demanding applications such as offshore drilling, chemical reactors, heat exchangers, and aerospace systems.
5. Austenitic Stainless Steel (Domestic and Imported)
Widely used general-purpose grades: 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 316Ti, 310S, 321, 253MA
Known for their excellent formability, weldability, and resistance to oxidizing environments.
