Medical grade copper pipe EN 13348

Date:2025-06-20

Copper tubes play a critical role in healthcare facilities by transporting medical gases safely and efficiently. To prevent contamination and ensure the integrity of these gases, copper tubing is manufactured with an exceptionally clean and smooth inner surface—an essential requirement that copper meets with proven reliability.

Modern hospitals rely on centralized Medical Gas Pipeline Systems (MGPS), which are now mandatory in critical care areas such as Intensive Care Units (ICU), Operating Theatres (OT), Cardiac Care Units (CCU), and Neonatal Nurseries. Compared to traditional gas cylinders, copper pipeline systems offer superior reliability and uninterrupted supply, which can be crucial in life-saving situations.

Copper tubes are widely preferred due to their ability to withstand high pressures, excellent corrosion resistance, long-term durability, and ease of installation. They have a well-established performance record and comply with international standards for medical gas applications.

Safety regulations governing oxygen and other pressurized medical gases specify the use of Type K or Type L copper tubes, in accordance with ASTM B 819. These tubes must meet stringent cleanliness requirements because pressurized oxygen can cause spontaneous ignition in the presence of organic residues, such as residual lubricants from the manufacturing process. To ensure patient safety, copper tubes for medical gas systems must be thoroughly cleaned, sealed, and protected during transport and installation to avoid contamination.

Medical-grade copper tubes are produced in compliance with EN 13348 and BS EN 1057 standards. Their manufacturing involves rigorous inspection and strict quality control protocols.

Below is an overview of the key features and specifications of medical-grade copper tubes.
