Precautions for large diameter LSAW pipe installation

Date:2024-11-25

Large-diameter Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded (LSAW) pipes are extensively utilized in industries such as natural gas, petroleum, chemicals, and OCTG (Oil Country Tubular Goods). These pipes typically have an outer diameter of 500 mm or more. Given their considerable weight, special care must be taken during installation to ensure safety and effectiveness.

1. Preparing the Foundation

Before installation, level the sand and soil in the trench and compact it using a flat vibrating tamper. The sand cushion must meet the design specifications for flatness, height, thickness, width, and compactness. Only after a thorough inspection and approval can the steel pipes be lowered into place.

2. Material Compliance

Steel pipes and pipe materials used in tap water pipeline projects must comply with relevant product standards and design regulations. Factory certification is essential to confirm that the materials do not compromise water quality.

3. Handling and Transport

Large-diameter LSAW pipes should be handled using slings or specialized lifting tools. During transportation, ensure the pipes are securely fastened and cushioned to prevent damage. Collisions between pipes must be avoided.

4. Positioning the Pipe Joints

Inspect the trench bottom and mark the positions of pipe joints and fittings before lowering the pipes. A working pit should be excavated at each joint to facilitate the installation process. The size of the working pit should allow for convenient access and assembly of the pipe joints.

5. Lowering the Pipes

To lower the steel pipes, use two cranes to lift both ends simultaneously. Wrap the pipe body with high-strength nylon slings to provide secure support. Carefully and slowly lower the pipes into the prepared trench.

6. Crane Operation

Crane operation should be conducted under the guidance of designated personnel to ensure safety. The lifting speed must remain uniform, with smooth rotation and controlled lowering speed. Abrupt slowing or braking of the crane should be avoided to prevent damage to the pipes or the trench.

By adhering to these guidelines, the installation process can be performed safely and efficiently, ensuring the integrity and performance of large-diameter LSAW pipes in their respective applications.
