Long-distance oil and gas pipelines play a crucial role in ensuring energy supply. During the anti-corrosion construction process of these pipelines, the surface treatment of straight seam steel pipes is a key factor influencing the longevity of the anti-corrosion layer. The effectiveness of the anti-corrosion layer's bond with the steel pipe is critical to its durability.

 

Research by institutions has confirmed that the lifespan of the anti-corrosion layer depends on several factors, including the type of coating, coating quality, and the construction environment. Therefore, it is essential to standardize the surface requirements of steel pipes, continuously explore best practices, and improve surface treatment methods.

 

For cleaning straight seam steel pipes, solvents and emulsions are typically used to remove oil, grease, dust, lubricants, and other organic substances from the steel surface. However, they are not effective at removing rust, oxide scale, welding flux, and similar contaminants, which is why they are considered auxiliary methods in anti-corrosion production.

 

To remove rust from straight seam steel pipes, manual tools such as wire brushes are commonly used. These tools can effectively eliminate loose oxide scale, rust, welding slag, and other debris. Manual rust removal typically reaches the Sa2 level, while power tools can achieve the Sa3 level. However, if the steel surface is coated with firmly adhered iron oxide scale, the rust removal effect may be less effective, and the required depth of the anchor pattern for anti-corrosion may not be achieved.

 

Pickling of straight seam steel pipes is generally done through chemical or electrolytic methods, with chemical pickling being the primary choice for pipeline anti-corrosion. This method effectively removes oxide scale, rust, and old coatings and may also be used as a follow-up treatment after sandblasting and rust removal. Although chemical pickling can provide a certain level of cleanliness and surface roughness, it produces a shallow anchor pattern and can cause environmental pollution.

The most commonly used welding method for both straight seam steel pipes (ERW/LSAW) and spiral seam pipes (SSAW) is submerged arc welding (SAW), known for its excellent quality, high productivity, and stable technology.
