Forming technology of straight seam steel pipes

Date:2025-01-06

Straight seam welded pipes are widely used in construction due to their proven performance and reliability. The manufacturing process involves several key steps to ensure that the pipes meet stringent quality standards.

Edge Pre-bending
The initial step involves using a pre-bending machine to bend the edges of the steel plates to the required curvature, preparing them for the subsequent forming process.

JCO Forming
The pre-bent plate is then processed on a JCO forming machine. The steps are as follows:

The first half of the plate is pressed into a "J" shape using a series of controlled punches.

The second half is bent in the same way to form a "C" shape.

The two sides are then brought together to form an open "O" shape.

Initial Welding
After forming the "O" shape, the edges are welded together using gas-shielded arc welding (MAG) to ensure they are securely joined for further processing.

Internal Welding
The interior seam of the pipe is welded using multi-wire submerged arc welding, with up to four wires being employed to ensure a strong, even weld.

External Welding
Similarly, the external seam is welded using the same multi-wire submerged arc welding process, ensuring that the exterior is just as strong and uniform as the interior.

Ultrasonic Testing
The internal and external welds, as well as the parent material, undergo ultrasonic testing to detect any potential flaws. This step ensures the highest quality control and compliance with industry standards.

X-ray Inspection
A 100% X-ray inspection is carried out on both the internal and external welds. This process uses industrial television systems to examine the welds thoroughly, ensuring the sensitivity of flaw detection and maintaining the integrity of the pipe.

Diameter Expansion
To improve the dimensional accuracy and stress distribution, the pipe's diameter is expanded along its entire length. This step ensures better stability and alignment, which are essential for the pipe’s performance under pressure.

Hydrostatic Testing
Each pipe undergoes a hydrostatic test, where it is subjected to water pressure to verify that it meets the required pressure standards. The testing machine records and stores all results for future reference, ensuring the pipes are up to standard and reliable.

This process ensures that straight seam welded pipes are fabricated to meet high-quality and performance standards, making them ideal for various construction and industrial applications.
