Manufacturing process of stainless steel seamless pipe

Date:2024-10-09

The corrosion resistance of stainless steel seamless pipes is primarily determined by the alloying elements within the steel. Chromium is the key element responsible for this resistance. When the chromium content reaches approximately 12%, it reacts with oxygen in the corrosive environment to form a thin oxide layer (self-passivating film) on the surface of the steel. This layer helps protect the steel from further corrosion. In addition to chromium, stainless steel seamless pipes may contain other alloying elements such as nickel, molybdenum, titanium, niobium, copper, and nitrogen. These elements are added to achieve specific structural and performance characteristics suited to various applications. Below is an explanation from Super Steel Manufacturing Co., Ltd. regarding the manufacturing process of stainless steel seamless pipes.

1. Hot Rolled (Extruded) Seamless Steel Pipe:

The production process for hot rolled seamless steel pipes involves the following steps:

Round tube billet → Heating → Piercing → Three-roll cross rolling, continuous rolling, or extrusion → Tube removal → Sizing (or reducing) → Cooling → Straightening → Hydraulic test (or non-destructive testing) → Marking → Warehousing

The raw material for hot rolling seamless pipes is round billets, which are cut into sections of about 1 meter in length using a cutting machine. These billets are then heated in a furnace, typically to around 1200°C, using fuels such as hydrogen or acetylene. Temperature control in the furnace is crucial to the process. After heating, the billets are pierced using a pressure puncher, with tapered roller piercing machines being the most commonly used. These machines offer high production efficiency, good product quality, and the ability to handle various types of steel with large diameter expansion.

After piercing, the round billets are rolled using three rolls, continuously rolled, or extruded. The pipes are then calibrated using a sizing machine that employs a high-speed rotating tapered drill bit to form the desired inner diameter. Following sizing, the pipes are cooled in a cooling tower with water sprays. After cooling, the pipes are straightened and undergo internal flaw detection using either a metal flaw detector or hydraulic test. Any cracks or bubbles inside the pipe will be identified at this stage. Once inspected, the pipes undergo manual quality control, where they are marked with serial numbers, specifications, and production batch numbers. Finally, they are transported to the warehouse using a crane.

2. Cold Rolled (Drawn) Seamless Steel Pipe:

The cold rolling (or cold drawing) process for seamless steel pipes follows these steps:

Round tube billet → Heating → Piercing → Heading → Annealing → Pickling → Oiling (copper plating) → Multi-pass cold drawing (cold rolling) → Billeting → Heat treatment → Straightening → Hydraulic test (flaw detection) → Marking → Warehousing

The cold rolled (drawn) process is more complex than hot rolling. While the first three steps are similar to hot rolling, the process differs starting from the fourth step. After the tube blank is pierced, it undergoes heading and annealing. Post-annealing, the pipes are pickled with a special acid solution, and oil is applied. This is followed by multiple passes of cold drawing or rolling to refine the tube. After these passes, the pipe undergoes heat treatment and is then straightened.

Once straightened, the pipes undergo hydraulic testing or flaw detection, after which they are marked and stored in the warehouse.
